Ministry of Health and Social Welfare

Within the framework of reforms aimed at modernizing the healthcare system and strengthening social policies, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Evis Sala, conducted an official visit to Austria. During the visit, she met with the Austrian Federal Minister for Labour, Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection, Korinna Schumann, as well as representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to reinforce interinstitutional cooperation.

The two ministers appreciated the strong bilateral relations and Austria’s ongoing support in strengthening Albania’s healthcare system and social inclusion policies.

“Albania values Austria’s continuous support in strengthening the healthcare system and advancing social inclusion policies,” Minister Sala stated.

Discussions focused on deepening cooperation through a new Healthcare Agreement for the period 2026–2030, as well as strategic investments in the modernization of healthcare infrastructure, emergency medical services, advanced technology, and the reconstruction of regional hospitals. This cooperation aims to improve service quality and enhance social welfare for citizens.

With representatives of the IAEA, discussions centered on strengthening the national radiotherapy program, as part of the reform to establish the National Institute of Oncology and consolidate the National Cancer Network.

Minister Sala emphasized that investments in science and technology form the foundation of healthcare transformation, directing the system toward higher-quality, safer services that are closer to patient needs.

“Albania has a clear vision: leveraging science to strengthen cancer care, nuclear medicine, and radiation safety,” she stated.

The meetings reaffirmed the commitment to long-term partnerships that support professional development, capacity building, and the safety of patients and healthcare personnel.

This expanded international cooperation strengthens Albania’s path toward contemporary European standards in healthcare and social protection.
